NASHVILLE â Nashville shortstop Tomas de la Rosa drove the first pitch he received from Oklahoma reliever Dan Murray in the bottom of the ninth inning off the wall in left-center to plate Aaron Holbert and give the Sounds a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the RedHawks in front of a standing room-only crowd of 13,423 fans on Friday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a three-game series.
The win, Nashville's fourth in a row overall and ninth straight home victory, pulled the Sounds within a half-game of the PCL East lead. Front-runner New Orleans lost in Memphis on a 9th-inning homer.
de la Rosa's game-winning two-bagger was his second of the contest. He erased a 3-1 Oklahoma advantage in the bottom of the sixth frame with a two-run double to right-center off Oklahoma starter Mario Ramos.
The RedHawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on leftfielder Jason Jones' seventh home run of the year, a two-run shot to right off Nashville starter Matt Guerrier. The Sounds got a run back in the bottom of the frame when designated hitter John Barnes (2-for-3) plated catcher Brad King with an RBI single.
Oklahoma extended its advantage to 3-1 in the fifth when catcher Danny Ardoin and third baseman G.J. Raymundo led off the frames with back-to-back doubles off Guerrier. The Sounds knotted the contest on de la Rosa's two-RBI double in the sixth, which scored Holbert and third baseman Dave Doster.
Holbert led off the bottom of the ninth with a ground ball to short, which was misplayed by Manny Alexander to allow the Nashville second baseman to reach safely. de la Rosa (2-for-4, 3 RBI) followed by drilling Murray's first pitch for the game-winner, which resulted in the Sounds' 10th last at-bat victory.
Sounds reliever Jim Mann (3-0) picked up the victory after tossing two scoreless innings in relief of Guerrier, who allowed three runs over seven innings. The right-hander fanned three and did not walk a batter; he has issued only three free passes in his last 50 2/3 innings of work. Murray (4-7) was tagged with the loss after giving up the game-winning hit.
The Sounds and RedHawks meet again on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. in the second game of the four-game series. Nashville right-hander Brian Meadows (4-0, 1.86) will face Oklahoma southpaw Randy Keisler (5-1, 2.87). A fireworks show will follow the on-field action.
