
Hebson Selected by Montreal, Colon Placed on DL

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that the right-handed pitcher Bryan Hebson has been selected by the Montreal Expos. Hebson replaces right-handed pitcher Dan Smith on the Expos roster. Smith was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 26, with right rotator-cuff inflammation. In addition the Trappers announced that right-handed pitcher Jose Colon has been placed on the seven day disabled list, retroactive to July 1, with right shoulder tendonitis. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 21 players; nine pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and four outfielders, plus three players (right-handed pitcher Jose Colon, left-handed pitcher Scott Downs and right-handed pitcher Bo Donaldson) on the disabled list.
Hebson, 27, was 6-0, 4.36 (43.1 IP - 21 ER) with six saves in 30 appearances with the Trappers this season. The Columbus, Georgia native was 2-0, 2.94 (15.1 IP - 5 ER) with six saves in his final nine appearances with the Trappers was tied with Scott Downs for the team lead in wins. Hebson currently leads the Trappers in games pitched. He will be making his Major League debut with the Expos. Hebson was 10-1, 1.72 (94.1 IP - 18 ER) with seven saves in 38 appearances (three starts) with Double-A Harrisburg and 1-0, 4.82 (9.1 IP - 5 ER) in five appearances with Triple-A Ottawa in 2002. He is 17-1 in 73 appearances (three starts) over the last two seasons. Hebson was originally selected by Montreal out of Auburn University in the first round (44th overall) of the 1997 draft. He began the 2002 season with a career minor league record of 33-36 with seven saves in 141 appearances (82 starts). Hebson posted a 3.42 ERA (576.2 IP - 219 ER) in that time.
Colon, 28, is 1-1, 5.85 (20.0 IP - 13 ER) in 13 appearances with the Trappers this season. He was 1-1, 4.28 (27.1 IP - 13 ER) with seven saves in 25 appearances with Saltillo of the Mexican League earlier in 2003. Colon was loaned to the club by the Expos on March 30 after signing as a free agent with Montreal on November 21, 2002. The native of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic was originally singed as a non-drafted free agent by the Cleveland Indians in 1995 and had spent his entire career with the Indians organization up until the end of the 2002 campaign. Colon spent last year with Double-A Akron, where he was 5-4, 2.37 (76.0 IP - 20 ER) with five saves in 46 appearances (two starts). He began the 2003 season with a career minor league record of 25-11 in 208 appearances (13 starts). Colon has posted a 2.38 ERA (363.0 IP - 96 ER) and recorded 65 saves entering this season. He is the younger brother of Chicago White Sox right-hander Bartolo Colon.
