Midland RockHounds News Release
The RockHounds had just four hits Wednesday night ... Corpus Christi had 11 ... but the 'Hounds "made the most" of their chances and defeated the Hooks, 3-2, at Momentum Bank Ballpark.
Three of the game's five runs were scored in the first inning with the 'Hounds emerging with a one-run lead they would not relinquish.
The Houston Astros' Aledmys Diaz (who is with the Hooks on a Major League rehab assignment) led off the game with a single and scored on David Hensley's two-out double. The RockHounds answered with Mickey McDonald leading off the home half of the first with a single and Jhonny Santos reaching on a walk. A wild pitch from Hooks starter Brett Daniels pushed the runners to second and third with Jonah Bride's fielder's choice and Devin Foyle's sacrifice fly producing a 2-1 lead.
Foyle led off the fourth with a gorgeous bunt single and Collin Theroux drilled an RBI double deep into the left corner, bringing Foyle home with what would be the winning run.
Corpus Christi drew to within 3-2 on an RBI single from Joe Perez in the fifth and Hensley opened the sixth with a leadoff double, but RockHounds starter Jared Koenig got a pair of ground ball outs before stranding the potential tying run at third when center fielder Santos hauled in a 400-foot drive off the bat of Corey Julks to end the inning
Koenig battled through six innings for the win, with Jack Weisenburger (hold) going 1â..." innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three. Aaron Brown entered the game with one on and two out in the eighth and closed the door for his ninth save in as many chances.
The 'Hounds and Hooks have split the first two of the six-game series and the victory was the RockHounds 12th in their last 15 games.
Kibbles & Bits
Jared Koenig had played in four independent leagues before the Oakland A's found him in New Zealand (pitching in the Australian Baseball League) and gave him his first opportunity in the affiliated minors. He has responded with a 5-1 season with the RockHounds and has ranked among the Double-A Central's top three all season in ERA (2.37), WHIP (1.10) and opponent batting average (.198).
