Pittsfield Colonials News Release
David Qualben pitched well into the eighth and Johnny Welch keyed the offense with a two-run homer as the Pittsfield Colonials picked up their first win of 2011, downing the New Jersey Jackals 5-2.
For the second straight night the Colonials scored in the first inning as Angel Molina singled home Matt Nandin for a 1-0 lead.
That lead would stand until the fourth inning when Mike Jones hit his second homer in as many nights, a two-run shot to give the Jackals a 2-1 lead.
The Colonials whisked the lead back in the bottom of the sixth as Johnny Welch connected on his first homer in a Pittsfield uniform, a two-run blast to left center for a 3-2 Colonials lead. Pittsfield would add to the lead in the seventh when Quentin Davis scored on an error and Matt Nandin scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 5-2.
David Qualben (1-0) picked up the win going 7.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits. He walked none and struck out three. James Leverton (0-1) took the loss for NJ, despite allowing just two earned runs in six innings of work.
In addition to the offense for the Colonials from Welch, Billy Mottram had three hits for Pittsfield.
The rubber game of the series comes up on Saturday with a 12:30 first pitch. Miguel Flores will get the start for the Colonials against Chris Vasami. Grand Slam Boxing will also be part of the entertainment on Saturday night as at 7:30 p.m. Todd "The Punisher" Poulton will take on Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake in the main event.
