New Jersey Jackals News Release
Pittsfield, Mass. - Mike Jones launched his second home run in as many games to begin the season, but the New Jersey Jackals committed four errors as they fell to the Pittsfield Colonials, 5-2, on Friday night at Wahconah Park.
For the second straight night, the Colonials opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning when second baseman Danny Bomback reached on an error by Jackals' shortstop Mike DeJesus and scored on a hard-hit single off the left field wall by right fielder Angel Molina.
The Jackals took the lead in the top of the fourth inning when right fielder Myron Leslie led off with a single and Jones ripped a two-run home run off a gazebo beyond the right field wall, but New Jersey would collect just three more hits from that point on.
Pittsfield re-gained a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by third baseman Johnny Welch. In the seventh, the Colonials used a trio of stolen bases and a throwing error by catcher Chris Anderson to tack on two insurance runs.
New Jersey starter James Leverton, who pitched exclusively as a reliever in the Chicago Cubs' organization last season, allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits over six innings with two walks and two strikeouts in his first start since 2009. Leverton (0-1) took the loss while Pittsfield starter Dave Qualben (1-0) earned the win after surrendering two runs on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings.
Offensively for New Jersey, Jones, Leslie, and third baseman Nick Giarraputo each collected two hits. Left fielder Billy Mottram paced the Colonials' offense, going 3-for-4 with three singles.
The Jackals and Colonials conclude their season-opening three-game series on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Wahconah Park when New Jersey sends right-hander Chris Vasami to the mound against Pittsfield righty Miguel Flores. Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
