Quakes Take Series Opener with Dominant Pitching, Grand Slam

San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes were locked in a pitchers' duel for first five innings of Friday's game but the Quakes took a lead in the sixth and unloaded in the seventh to take the opener of a three-game set 8-1. Neither Inland Empire starter Jason Alexander (2-3) nor Quakes starter Dustin May (1-3) allowed a baserunner until the fifth when each allowed singles.

The Quakes (21-27) finally scored on Alexander in the sixth when DH Cody Thomas tagged a solo homer, his second, to put Rancho Cucamonga on the board. Meanwhile May was dealing as the righty allowed two hits, the only baserunners on he allowed on the night, in six shutout frames with five Ks. Rancho Cucamonga broke it open, aided by a 66ers (24-24) error in the seventh when, Gavin Lux launched a grand slam to right to blow it open 6-0. Inland Empire did push an unearned run across in the seventh but the Quakes tacked on two more in the ninth on Saige Jenco's RBI single and Rylan Bannon's RBI triple. Alberto Triunfel had two hits for the Sixers while Brandon Marsh doubled and stole a base.
