Quakes Split with High Desert After Thursday's Loss

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - One night after a walk-off win, it was walks and mistakes that doomed the Quakes in a 12-4 loss to High Desert on Thursday night. Rancho pitchers walked a season-high 11 batters in the contest.

The trouble started in the opening frame. Fabio Martinez (1-2, 4.11 ERA) threw 13 straight pitches out of the strike zone to start the game, which loaded the bases. It looked like he might escape the jam unscathed after inducing a pop out and a fielder's choice, but a balk and a throwing error allowed High Desert to plate two in the first inning.

Rancho Cucamonga (14-21) got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Brandon Dixon's one-out double extended his hitting streak to nine games. With Dixon on second, Corey Seager struck out swinging but the ball got away from catcher Tyler Marlette. Marlette's throw to first was off-target and Dixon came in to score.

Martinez's control issues continued in the second inning. After walking the bases loaded again, D.J. Peterson smoked a three-run double to center field that put High Desert up 5-1. That was the only hit Martinez allowed, but because of the six walks he gave up five runs (four earned) on the evening.

Daniel Tillman made his first appearance of the year in relief of Martinez, but he walked the bases loaded in the third inning. Tillman got out of the inning without allowing a run, but Rancho pitchers issued nine walks in the game's first three innings.

High Desert (20-15) added another run in the fourth inning. D.J. Peterson doubled and stole third before scoring on a passed ball. Through four innings, the Mavericks led 6-1 despite having just two hits. On the night, Rancho had three wild pitches, two passed balls, an error and a hit batter to go along with the 11 walks.

Despite the issues, the Quakes pulled within three in the sixth inning. With one out and a man on, Chris Jacobs blasted his team-leading seventh home run to left field to make it a 6-3 game. Jake Zokan (1-0, 4.76) came out with two outs in the inning after striking out seven in 5.2 innings.

Rancho's momentum did not last long, as the Mavericks poured it on with five runs in the seventh inning off of Gustavo Gomez. They hit around and recorded five hits including a pair of long balls in the inning. High Desert added a solo homer in the ninth off of Owen Jones.

Rancho Cucamonga starts a three-game series at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore Friday night. 2013 first-rounder Chris Anderson (2-2, 4.25 ERA) gets the ball for Rancho in search of his second straight win against Lake Elsinore's Bryan Rodriguez (0-2, 2.43 ERA). First pitch is at 7:05 pm and the game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350 starting with the LoanMart Pregame Report at 6:50 pm.
