Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Great pitching and some timely luck helped Rancho Cucamonga snap a three-game losing streak, as the Quakes squeaked out a 1-0 win over Inland Empire at LoanMart Field on Sunday evening.
Major League veteran Trevor Cahill started on the mound in his Quakes' debut, tossing four hitless innings, allowing two walks. The 27-year-old right-hander, who was recently released by the Atlanta Braves and signed with the Dodgers as a minor league free agent on July 2nd, struck out eight batters.
Right-hander Rob Rogers (4-1) followed on the mound for Rancho Cucamonga (8-9, 49-38), pitching three scoreless innings with two strikeouts while scattering three hits and a walk.
Dan Tillman kept Inland Empire (6-11, 40-46) off the scoreboard with a perfect eighth inning in relief. Caleb Dirks induced three groundouts in the ninth inning to record his first save in a Quakes' uniform.
The Quakes snapped a scoreless tie in the seventh inning against 66ers' starter Harrison Cooney (1-8). Erisbel Arruebarrena led off the frame with a grounder to second base, but Andrew Daniel's wild throw went into the Inland Empire dugout for a two-base error. Paul Hoenecke pushed Arruebarrena to third with a groundout. With two outs and Tyler Ogle at the plate, Cooney uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Arruebarrena to hustle home with the only run of the contest.
Cooney pitched a season-long seven innings in the tough-luck defeat, surrendering the unearned run and only two hits. Johan Mieses singled in the fourth inning for the Quakes, while Ogle doubled in the fifth.
With the win, Rancho Cucamonga pulls to within one game of the .500 mark since the All-Star Break at 8-9. The shutout was the seventh by the Quakes' pitching staff this season, which is tied for third in the California League with Lancaster.
The Quakes will take on Inland Empire in the rubber game of the three-game set on Monday night. Rancho Cucamonga will send right-hander Zack Bird (4-5, 4.58 ERA) to the mound, while the 66ers counter with right-hander Jordan Kipper (3-6, 4.63 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. If you can't make it to LoanMart Field, you can follow all the action on FOX Sports 1350 AM, beginning with the LoanMart Pregame show at 6:50.
