Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA-- Garrett Kennedy's two-out double in the ninth proved to be the game-winning hit, as Rancho Cucamonga downed Lake Elsinore on Friday night at The Diamond, winning by a score of 3-2.
Kennedy's two-out hit brought home Johan Mieses, helping Rancho to end a two-game skid and also stopping Lake Elsinore's season-high nine-game winning streak.
Tied at 2-2 in the ninth, the Quakes got back-to-back singles to open the inning against Storm closer Colby Blueberg (2-2). After a sacrifice bunt by Ariel Sandoval pushed runners to second and third, the Storm elected to walk Joey Curletta, loading the bases with one out for Kennedy. The Quakes attempted to execute a suicide squeeze, but Kennedy couldn't get the bunt down and Yusniel Diaz was tagged out between third and home. Two pitches later, Kennedy ripped a ball over the head of right fielder Franmil Reyes, scoring Mieses with what turned out to be the winning run.
Andrew Sopko, who was scheduled to start Friday's game, but instead worked out of the bullpen due to Dodgers' rehabbing reliever Yimi Garcia, finished it off in the last of the ninth. Sopko got the first two hitters but gave up consecutive two-out singles, bringing Trae Santos to the plate. With lefty reliever Alex Burgos warming in the bullpen, Manager Drew Saylor stayed with Sopko and the move paid off, as Sopko got Santos looking on three pitches to end the game and earn his league-high-tying tenth win of the year.
Garcia gave up a second-inning homer to Santos as the Storm took a 1-0 lead. It would be the only run Garcia would give up in his two inning of work.
The Quakes tallied two in the sixth and chased Storm starter Brett Kennedy. Brandon Trinkwon's RBI single evened the game at 1-1, as he brought Erick Mejia home. Trinkwon later scored on a ground ball by Matt Beaty to give the Quakes their first lead of the night at 2-1.
Sopko gave up his one and only run of the night in the sixth, as the Storm got even, thanks to Danny Bravo's two-out infield hit off the bare hand of Sopko, tying the game at 2-2.
Sopko (10-2) allowed just one run on five hits, striking out a season-best nine hitters in the win.
