Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Akeem Bostick tossed six strong innings and retired the final 10 hitters he faced to lead the Lancaster JetHawks over the High Desert Mavericks, 6-3, on Saturday night at The Hangar.
Four of Bostick's (2-1) six innings on the hill were perfect. The right-hander allowed three runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
David Lyon delivered all of High Desert's runs with a three-run home run in the top of the second inning to open the scoring. The JetHawks responded with four in the bottom half and took a lead that they would not relinquish. Johnny Sewald brought in the first run with a perfect drag bunt RBI single to first base. Aaron Mizell came through with a sacrifice fly, Bobby Boyd had an RBI ground out, and Antonio Nunez put the JetHawks in front with a solid RBI single to center.
Sewald went 2-for-4 and is 7-for-13 in the first three games of this series. He is hitting .353 in July.
The JetHawks added a pair of runs in the fifth. Bryan Muniz brought in one with an RBI fielder's choice grounder and another scored on an error on the same play.
Andrew Thome struck out three over 1.2 innings out of the Lancaster bullpen. Ryan Deemes was summoned for a four-out save and retired all four batters he faced, striking out one. It was his fifth save in six opportunities with the JetHawks this season.
The JetHawks made several impressive defensive plays to back up their pitching staff. Drew Ferguson, making just his third start of the season in center field, made a terrific diving catch moving to his left to end the top of the fifth inning and rob Jose Cardona of a hit.
Bobby Boyd threw out Travis Demeritte at second base from left field in the third, who was trying to stretch a single into a double.
The JetHawks (54-45) and Mavericks (58-41) conclude their four-game series on Sunday night at The Hangar. Jose Hernandez (0-0) will start for Lancaster in his JetHawks debut against Reed Garrett (0-0). First pitch is 5:05 p.m.
The JetHawks are celebrating their 20th anniversary season in Lancaster. Great ticket packages and group events are on sale now at jethawks.com or by calling (661) 726-5400.
