Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - The JetHawks fell behind 6-0 early and their comeback attempt came up short, as the High Desert Mavericks hung on for a 9-8 victory on Friday night at The Hangar.
The Mavericks put up a run in the first inning after Scott Heineman opened the game with a double and later came in on an RBI ground out by Luke Tendler. They added five in the third, as they took advantage of control issues by JetHawks starter Alex Winkelman (0-2) and knocked him out of the game. The left-hander walked five in the frame and surrendered a two-run double to Travis Demeritte and a three-run home run to Jose Trevino.
The JetHawks began their comeback in the third with a pair of runs. Johnny Sewald delivered an RBI triple and Antonio Nunez followed with an RBI ground out. Sewald came a home run shy of the cycle in the game.
Lancaster added one in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh. Marc Wik came through with a pair of two-out RBI singles. Nunez also brought in a run with an RBI single, his second run batted in of the contest. In his first game with the JetHawks, Osvaldo Duarte picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice grounder.
The Mavericks went up 9-3 with three runs in the fifth inning. Travis Demeritte led off with his 23rd home run of the season, which leads the league.
David Ledbetter (4-7) was the winning pitcher for High Desert despite allowing 11 hits and five earned runs in five and two-thirds innings.
Dean Deetz tossed three shutout innings in relief for the JetHawks and struck out four. Nick Gardewine earned his second save for High Desert. The right-hander retired all seven batters he faced on just 20 pitches and struck out three. He came on with runners on first and third and two out in the seventh and picked up a strikeout to keep the tying run 90 feet away.
The JetHawks (53-45) and Mavericks (58-40) continue their four-game series on Saturday night at The Hangar.
Akeem Bostick (1-1) will start for Lancaster against Jeffrey Springs (2-0). First pitch is 6:05 p.m.
