Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA-- The High Desert Mavericks rallied past the Quakes on Friday night, downing Rancho Cucamonga for a second straight game, winning 9-8 at LoanMart Field.
Trailing 7-3 in the fourth, the Mavs scored six of the game's final seven runs, slugging a total of four home runs on the night to give them seven in the first two games of the four-game set.
Quakes' starter Felipe Gonzalez (2-5) was unable to hold the four-run lead, as the Mavs got a home run from David Lyon in the fourth and then capped a four-run fifth with Luke Tendler's first of two round-trippers, giving High Desert an 8-7 lead.
Tendler struck again off of Alex Burgos in the seventh, as his 17th homer of the year made it 9-7.
The Quakes, who put up seven runs in the first three innings against Mavs' starter David Ledbetter, couldn't push across anything else until the ninth.
Noah Perio, who had an outstanding debut on Friday with four hits, singled to open the inning, then scored on a two-out single by Johan Mieses, making it a 9-8 affair against Mavs' closer Nick Gardewine. Mieses' single got past right fielder Jairo Beras, allowing Mieses to move into scoring position. But with two outs, Gardewine got Ariel Sandoval with a grounder to second, for the final out, giving him his third save of the year.
The Quakes built a big early lead against Ledbetter (5-7), as Johan Mieses (17) and Julian Leon (8) both went deep as part of a four-run second, making it a 6-3 lead for Rancho after just two innings.
In the third, the Quakes took a 7-3 advantage, as Mieses drove in his second run of the night with a sac fly to score Beaty.
Mavs' left fielder Scott Heineman, who finished with two homers in Thursday's win, went deep again on Friday, his 14th of the year.
The Quakes (19-16, 61-44) will look to break their two-game skid on Saturday night. Rancho has yet to officially name a starting pitcher for Saturday, but High Desert will throw lefty Jeffrey Springs (2-1).
Saturday will be another Fireworks Night, sponsored by Frontier Communications. It's also First Responder's Night, as we honor the men and women who serve and protect our community. Game time is 7:05pm and tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at LoanMart Field very soon ... Go Quakes!
