Offense Sputters in Loss, 5-2

July 30, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

It was a hot Friday night in Bakersfield, and though the team auctioned off specialty jerseys and raised a nice chunk of funds for the League of Dreams, the Blaze offense could not wake up from a dream of their own, and fell to visiting Lancaster, 5-2.

The loss certainly wasn't for lack of chances, as Bakersfield stranded 11 baserunners on the night, but the club simply could not get those runners home.

Meanwhile, the Jethawks, who actually had one fewer baserunner on the night, used a key 2nd inning wild-pitch to scratch for a pair of runs off Blaze starter Anthony Misiewicz (L, 6-9), and three solo homers to slowly pull away.

Dean Deetz (W, 6-5) got the win for Lancaster with a very strong showing, working 6.0 innings and giving up just one run on three hits.

The Blaze rallied late, repeatedly, but frustration overcame the home team. In the 7th, the Blaze left the bases loaded without plating a run. The club stranded two more in the 8th, and though a grounder brought home a run in the 9th, an argument over a fair-or-foul call took the sting out of a potential rally, and the Jethawks reliever Kevin Comer (S, 2) got the final two outs for the save.

Offensively for Bakersfield, Justin Seager reached base all four times, and Darin Gillies and Thyago Vieira worked the final 4.0 innings on the hill, with Vieira striking out four.

Saturday night is another Fireworks Show! Celebrate the warm sun going down with a Blaze game and a night-time pyrotechnics extravaganza. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 7:35pm, with the Jethawks sticking around for another two games.

Can't make it? You'll regret it, but at least you can listen to Dan Besbris call all the action live at BakersfieldBlaze.com and via TuneIn Radio.
