Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA- The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes cruised to a 12-2 thrashing of the Inland Empire 66ers on Friday with early offense and magnificent relief pitching from Chase De Jong and evened a four-game set at one-game-apiece in the process.
The Quakes (53-43, 12-14) jumped on Sixers starter Jeremy Rhoades (1-1) for five runs in the top of the first inning. Jacob Scavuzzo's three-run homer was the key blast in the frame. It was the Orange, CA native's fifth homer in his 20th game for Rancho Cucamonga.
Inland Empire (47-48, 12-13) scored twice in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit to 5-2. Bo Way, Eric Aguilera and Kody Eaves all tagged doubles off Quakes starter Chris Hatcher. The right-hander, on a Major League rehab assignment for the Dodgers allowed the only hits that the Quakes would allow on the night in his lone inning of work. Brock Stewart allowed a runner in relief in the second inning for the Quakes on an error and a fielder's choice. Inland Empire would not have another base runner until the ninth inning.
Rancho Cucamonga chased Rhoades after three innings capped off by Tyler Ogle's three-run homer in the third. It was Ogle's 14th dinger of the year and came on the day he was activated from the disabled list.
Chase De Jong earned his first Cal League win since coming to the Dodgers earlier in the month in a trade from the Toronto Blue Jays. The Long Beach, CA native improved to 1-1 with five dazzling innings of perfect relief work. He struck out nine batters on 66 pitches.
Sixers relievers Alex Blackford and Tyler Carpenter performed well for the home club. Blackford went three shutout innings with one hit allowed, no walks and six strikeouts. Carpenter fanned a pair and only allowed one hit in his two innings of work. The Quakes did tack on three runs in the top of the ninth off righty Garrett Nuss to push the lead to the final of 12-2.
The series continues Saturday on at 7:05 pm. It can be heard live at 66ers.com.
