
Homer in Sixth Spoils Martes' Debut

LANCASTER, Calif. - Francis Martes limited the Stockton Ports to two runs over the first five innings of his Cal League debut, but a shaky sixth inning handed the JetHawks a 5-4 loss on Friday night at The Hangar.
Over 5.2 innings of work, Martes yielded four runs one six hits and two walks, striking out nine. The right-hander held the Ports (52-45) scoreless through the first four innings.
With a one-out single in the second inning, Ronnie Mitchell extended his hitting streak to 17 games, tied for the second-longest by a JetHawks (50-47) player this season.
Entering the top of the sixth with a 4-2 lead, Martes allowed a leadoff single to Stockton's Tyler Marincov, who moved to third on a two-out single by B.J. Boyd. Troy Scribner (2-5) entered in relief and promptly surrendered a go-ahead, three-run homer to Michael Soto.
Lancaster opened the scoring in the second inning, as Mitchell scored from third on a passed ball. Mitchell had singled and advanced to third on a Marc Wik base hit. In the third, Derek Fisher led off with a triple and scored on a Jamie Ritchie sacrifice fly. Brian Holberton later added a RBI-single in the fourth. Ports starter Matt Stalcup allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk over four innings of work, striking out six.
Stockton came within one run in the top of the fifth on a Beau Taylor RBI-single and a run-scoring double by Melvin Mercedes. But Chase McDonald increased the JetHawks' lead to two runs with a RBI-single in the bottom half.
Sam Bragg (5-2) received the win for the Ports, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three over two innings of relief. Brendan McCurry recorded the save with a perfect ninth inning.
Tyler Brunnemann provided two innings of scoreless relief for the JetHawks in the contest.
The series continues on Saturday as Edison Frias (8-3, 4.01) takes the mound for the JetHawks against the Ports' Daniel Mengden (2-1, 5.26) with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Jose Altuve JetHawks jersey, courtesy of Affordable Air.
