Bats Quiet against Former 'Hawk Mengden

LANCASTER, Calif. - Facing former teammate Daniel Mengden for the first time, the JetHawks fell behind by four runs and were unable to recover in a 5-3 loss to the Stockton Ports on Saturday night at The Hangar.

Mengden (3-1) was perfect through his first 4.2 innings for Stockton (53-45) before J.D. Davis hit his 13th home run with two out in the fifth. The right-hander struck out eight and walked none through five scoreless innings in his first start since being traded by Houston to Oakland.

Through his first four innings of work, Edison Frias (8-4) allowed the Ports just one run, a second-inning RBI-double by B.J.

Boyd. But Frias yielded a three-run homer to Cal League home run leader Matt Chapman in the fifth, extending Stockton's lead to 4-0.

The JetHawks (50-48) came within two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jamie Ritchie led off with a single against the Ports' Lou Trivino. Ritchie advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Ronnie Mitchell groundout. Mitchell went 0-for-4 in the game, ending his hitting streak at 17 games, tied for second-longest by a JetHawk this season

Lancaster scored its final run in the eighth. With two out, Marc Wik reached second on a throwing error by shortstop Melvin Mercedes. On the following play, James Ramsay beat out an infield single, and a late and wild throw to first from Mercedes allowed Wik to score. In the bottom of the ninth, however, Brendan McCurry retired Lancaster in order to hand the JetHawks a second straight loss.

Left-hander Jordan Mills tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for Lancaster, striking out two.

The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. Austin Chrismon (3-2, 4.13) will pitch for the JetHawks, and Raul Alcantara (0-0, 3.76) will start for the Ports. The JetHawks will be hosting Military Appreciation Sunday, as all active and retired military members will receive 2-for-1 grandstand tickets with proof of military ID.
