Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
LAKE ELSINORE, CA - Rancho Cucamonga had its ten-game winning streak against Lake Elsinore snapped on Thursday night, falling 5-1 in the series finale at The Diamond.
The Storm (17-49, 48-88) grabbed a first-inning lead against Quakes' starter James Campbell (0-1), who was making his first appearance in a Rancho Cucamonga uniform since the 2013 season. Rehabbing San Diego Padres' outfielder Wil Myers was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Marcus Davis singled as Myers hustled to third. Davis stole second, setting up runners at second and third. Nick Torres' groundout to second base scored Myers with the game's first run. Fernando Perez singled to center field, plating Davis for a 2-0 advantage.
Campbell lasted four innings, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out five. The 23-year-old right-hander joined the Quakes from Low-A Great Lakes on Wednesday.
Lake Elsinore used some power to add to the margin in the fifth against reliever David Reid-Foley. Ricardo Valenzuela launched a solo home run to left field for his first of the season. Myers doubled to right-center field. Davis blasted a two-run homer over the 35-foot fence in right field, giving his club a 5-0 cushion.
Rancho Cucamonga (33-33, 74-62) finally broke through against Storm starter Kyle Lloyd (7-11) in the seventh. Joey Curletta stroked a one-out double down the left field line. Delvis Morales walked, placing runners at first and second. Devan Ahart roped a double off the right field wall, scoring Curletta to trim the deficit to 5-1.
Lloyd was dominant at times for Lake Elsinore, surrendering one run, six hits and three walks while tying a season-high with nine strikeouts. The right-hander had dropped six of his last seven decisions, prior to Thursday night.
The Quakes had one final chance to rally in the ninth against Storm reliever Jason Jester in a non-save situation. Josmar Cordero led off the inning with a single to left field. Curletta drew a walk, placing runners at first and second. Morales struck out and Spencer Navin popped out, leaving the potential tying run in the on-deck circle. Ahart struck out swinging to end the contest, ending Rancho Cucamonga's three-game overall winning streak while spoiling a chance for a series sweep.
The Quakes close out their slate of road games in the regular season with a 34-36 record. They finish the year with a 21-5 record against Lake Elsinore, which included a perfect 15-0 mark at LoanMart Field.
Rancho Cucamonga will conclude the regular season with a four-game series against Inland Empire at LoanMart Field, beginning on Friday night. The Quakes will send right-hander Chase De Jong (3-3, 3.80 ERA) to the mound, while the 66ers counter with right-hander Ryan Etsell (7-4, 4.28 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
