San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - Jose Reyes tossed seven innings with just one run allowed and the San Jose Giants pounded out 14 hits in a convincing 8-2 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. In San Jose's regular season home finale, the Giants built a 7-0 lead after five innings and never looked back to complete a sweep of the three-game series. San Jose (72-64) has now won 10 out of their last 11 games overall.
The playoff-bound Giants (42-24) extended their second half North Division lead to two games over Visalia (40-26) with four games remaining in the regular season. Thursday's results locked in a San Jose versus Stockton match-up in the best-of-three North Mini-Series beginning on September 9. The Giants can secure home field advantage in the series (host Games 2 and 3) with a second half title or a better overall record than the Ports (71-65).
Reyes (5-6) surrendered only three hits during his dominant stint on the mound to pick-up the win. The right-hander, who retired 21 out of the 25 batters he faced, struck out seven and did not issue a walk.
Christian Arroyo (3-for-5, 2B, RBI) and Ty Ross (3-for-4, RBI) had three hits apiece to lead the Giants offensive attack. Arroyo was honored as the 2015 San Jose Giants Team MVP in a ceremony prior to the game. Daniel Carbonell (2-for-4, 2B) and Tyler Horan (2-for-4, 2B) added two hits each while Ryder Jones (1-for-2, 3 RBI) drove in three runs.
San Jose plated two runs in both the second and third innings against Nuts starter Konner Wade to take an early 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Horan and Ross produced back-to-back two-out singles before Seth Harrison stepped to the plate and laced a two-RBI double into the left center field gap.
An inning later, John Polonius led off with a single and moved to third with one out on Wade's errant pick-off throw. Moments later, Arroyo lined a single into right plating Polonius to make it 3-0. Then after Carbonell doubled off the wall in left center advancing Arroyo to third, Jones lifted a sacrifice fly into right for a 4-0 cushion.
Meanwhile, Reyes began his night by retiring the first 11 Modesto hitters that came to plate, including five via the strikeout. In the top of the fourth with two outs, Rosell Herrera reached on a fielding error committed by Polonius at second base. Ryan McMahon then doubled to deep left center for the Nuts' first hit of the game. However with runners at second and third, Reyes induced Mike Benjamin, Jr. to pop out to first ending the inning.
After Reyes breezed through a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, the Giants broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Three straight one-out singles from Brandon Bednar, Arroyo and Carbonell loaded the bases. Jones then singled sharply up the middle to score Bednar and Arroyo with the first two runs of the inning. Then with two down, Ross singled into center - his third hit of the game - plating Carbonell to make it 7-0.
Reyes had retired eight consecutive Modesto hitters until McMahon doubled with one out in the top of the seventh. After Benjamin popped out, Ashley Graeter broke up the shutout with an RBI double into the right center field gap to cut the San Jose lead to 7-1. Reyes though recovered setting down Correlle Prime on a groundout to retire the side.
Dan Slania (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) relieved Reyes to start the top of the eighth and struck out the side in his only inning of work. The Nuts did plate one run in the frame when Wilfredo Rodriguez singled with one out, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Drew Weeks' two-out double.
The Giants completed the scoring for the night in the bottom of the eighth as Horan led off with a double and eventually came home on a two-out error. The run pushed the San Jose lead to 8-2.
Jarret Leverett (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth working around a two-out walk to seal the Giants victory.
Wade (8-9), who entered the game fifth in the California League in ERA (3.68), suffered the loss for Modesto. Wade was charged with seven runs (all earned) on 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out one and did not issue a walk.
