Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Quakes plated four runs in the first inning and hung on to beat the Cougars in their final tune up before the 2009 season officially begins on Thursday.
The Quakes jumped out in front of Azusa Pacific in the home half of the first inning as Andrew Romine walked to lead off the game, Jeremy Moore followed with a bunt base hit and Matt Sweeney hit a two-run triple into right center field to score Romine and Moore to give Rancho a 2-0 lead. Julio Perez followed with a walk and Efren Navarro grounded out to short to score Sweeney from third to make it 3-0. Perez made it to third on the groundout and scored on a Clay Fuller RBI single to swell the lead to 4-0.
Robert Fish, a graduate of AB Miller High School in Fontana, started for the Quakes and went three innings of scoreless ball and struck out four in his final tune up. Tim Kiely relieved Fish and allowed four runs, three earned in 1/3 of an inning of work. He walked two and allowed three hits, highlighted by a bases loaded, two-run double by Drew Evans to tie the score 4-4.
The Quakes added a run in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead when Alberto Rosario doubled to lead off the inning, he would come around to score on an RBI groundout to second base by Romine.
Jay Brossman gave the Quakes a little more insurance in the sixth on an inside-the-park home run to center. Center fielder Drew Evans slammed into the wall and the ball trickled into shallow center, by the time left fielder Stephen Gillette threw the ball home, Brossman had easily scored to give Rancho a 6-4 edge.
Abel Nieves added an RBI double in the eighth to give the Quakes a 7-4 advantage. The pitching staff took over from there as Jordon Towns, Jeremy Haynes, Ysmael Carmona, Eddie McKiernan and Mason Tobin did not allow a run over the last 5.2 innings while striking out 11.
The Quakes will open up the season on the road Thursday at Inland Empire against the 66ers at 7:05pm. Pitchers are yet to be determined.
