Great Lakes Loons News Release
DAVENPORT, IA - The Great Lakes Loons managed just four hits against the tandem of lefty Brian Holmes and righty Jordan Jankowski in a 6-1 matinee loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits. The low hit total came one day after busting out for an 18-hit attack Sunday.
Eric Smith doubled down the left field line in the top of the fifth to score Jesmuel Valentin from first base for the Loons' lone run of the game.
Meanwhile, Holmes (2-2) mowed down Loons batters on the mound. The 6-foot-4 lefty fanned 10 in five innings. The lone run he allowed was unearned as Valentin reached on a throwing error by third baseman Ryan Dineen. Jankowski followed with four scoreless frames to notch his first save. Each pitcher allowed just two hits.
Loons starter Lyndsey Caughel (0-2) allowed four runs (half earned) in his four innings of work to take the loss. Jake Hermsen and Luis Meza allowed one run each in relief.
Quad Cities notched two unearned runs in the third, capitalizing on an error by Smith after the Loons' catcher failed to pick up a ball down the first base line following a Caughel strikeout.
They tallied two more in the fourth on a two-run single up the middle by Terrell Joyce. Quad Cities got RBI hits in the seventh and eighth innings by Joe Sclafani and Jobduan Morales, respectively, late in the game to further increase the team's lead.
The two teams meet Tuesday in the series finale on the banks of the Mississippi River at Modern Woodman Park. Game time is 8 p.m. E.T. Right-hander Angel Sanchez (1-2, 5.14) starts for the Loons opposite lefty Joe Bircher (1-0, 3.15). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.
The Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
