Lansing Lugnuts News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Jose Berrios kept the Lansing Lugnuts (7-14) bats quiet while the Cedar Rapids Kernels (17-5) bats stayed hot, hitting for the cycle in the fifth inning and leading the Kernels to a 9-1 win at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Monday night.

Leading 2-1 in the fifth, the Kernels' bats went to work against Lugnuts starter Taylor Cole (Loss, 1-2).

With a runner on first and two outs, the Kernels combined to hit for the cycle, in order. Jorge Polanco started with a single, Dalton Hicks followed with a two-run double, Adam Brett Walker tripled in a run and Travis Harrison capped the scoring with a two-run homer way out to left field, giving the Kernels a 7-1 lead.

Cole pitched five innings for Lansing, allowing seven runs on eight hits. He walked two Kernels hitters and matched a season-high and career-high with seven strikeouts.

On the mound for Cedar Rapids, the 18-year-old Berrios (Win, 2-0) threw 6.2 strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits, with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Dalton Pompey stayed hot at the plate for Lansing, leading off the fourth inning with a triple and then scoring on a Christian Lopes double, the only Lugnuts run of the game. Chris Hawkins extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games while Gustavo Pierre's 10 game hitting-streak was snapped in the loss.

The series finale is Tuesday afternoon with first-pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET. Right-hander Roberto Osuna (1-1, 2.95) will toe the rubber for the Lugnuts against Kernels' lefty Matthew Tomshaw (0-0, 9.00).
