Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

Fort Wayne, IN - The Clinton LumberKings used a four-run third inning to create separation from the Fort Wayne TinCaps Monday night, defeating Fort Wayne, 6-2. Ruben Mejia endured a rough start, allowing five runs, two earned, taking the loss in his first start of the season.

Clinton (11-11) scored the game's first run in the first inning as Mejia suffered a procedural error. The righthander, who had not started since the 2012 regular season finale on September 3rd, attempted to fake a pickoff throw to first followed by a fake throw to first, which was outlawed prior to the 2013 season. The move resulted in a balk, sending the LumberKings' Jabari Henry across home plate.

Mejia (1-2) pitched a perfect second inning, but allowed four runs to score in the third inning, putting Fort Wayne (13-10) behind, 5-0.

The TinCaps' first run came off of Clinton starter Scott DeCecco (2-3) in the fifth inning. Luis Tejada blooped a run-scoring single to left-center field, scoring Gabriel Quintana. The only other Fort Wayne run came on an Alberth Martinez solo home run in the eighth inning.

DeCecco turned in eight innings, striking out five and did not walk a batter. In the two games in this series, Clinton starters have worked 17 innings and the entire LumberKings staff has not walked a batter.

The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for Tuesday morning at 11:05. The scheduled starters are Walker Weickel for The TinCaps and Victor Sanchez for the LumberKings. The game can be seen on XFINITY Channel 81 and be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
