Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
TULSA, OK - Dave Pszenyczny's overtime game-winning goal gave the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs a 3-2 victory over the Tulsa Oilers on Tuesday night at the BOK Center. For the third straight time between the teams, Tulsa held a one-goal third period lead only to fall to the Mudbugs, who are now 17-9-2 this season.
The Oilers scored early in the third period to take a 2-1 lead, but the Bugs came back to tie it up on a 5-on-3 powerplay to set up Pszenyczny's overtime winner. Dale Lupul was named the game's first star with a goal and an assist and Joe Blaznek chipped in two assists as well.
The Mudbugs built the tempo offensively throughout the first period of the game, eventually lighting the lamp at the 15:44 mark to take a 1-0 lead. Bossier-Shreveport cycled the puck nicely in the offensive zone until it came to Joe Blaznek in the corner. Simon Mangos snuck in from the point and one-timed Blaznek's pass over the glove hand of Kevin St. Pierre to make it 1-0 Mudbugs. The Bugs then killed off the only penalty of the period to take that one-goal lead into the locker room.
The Mudbugs maintained that lead throughout most of the second period of play, killing off a second Tulsa powerplay before the Oilers were able to tie it up with just 44 seconds left in the period. Mike Beausoleil was stopped on his initial rush, but followed the puck into the corner and got a pass out front for Jeff Christian, who backhanded a shot just inside the post to make it a 1-1 game after two periods.
The tie didn't last long though, as Brendan Hodge came out from behind the net and threw a shot on goal that found its way into Ken Carroll's five-hole to put Tulsa on top early in the third. Bossier-Shreveport battled back and eventually got the tying goal during a two-man powerplay advantage later in the period. The Mudbugs had a number of great scoring chances before Lupul fired a rebound into the top corner to tie the game at two with just under five minutes remaining.
Early in the overtime period, Lupul passed the puck to Pszenyczny, who skated down the middle of the ice and fired a low wrist shot just inside the post on St. Pierre's stick side to give the Mudbugs their first overtime victory of the season just 53 seconds into the extra session.
Ken Carroll made 24 saves in his sixth win of the season, while St. Pierre stopped 31 shots but fell to 5-12-3 this year. The Mudbugs converted 1 of 3 powerplay chances while the Oilers finished 0 for 2. Bossier-Shreveport had a 14-6 shot advantage in the third period and outshot Tulsa 34-26 overall in the game.
