Oklahoma City Barons News Release
The Oklahoma City community has once again displayed ingenuity by forming the Greater Oklahoma City Sports Consortium. The objective of this non-profit organization is to enhance the economy, image and quality of life of the Oklahoma City metro area through the evaluation and development of sports, special events and facilities.
It is believed that the Greater Oklahoma City Sports Consortium is the only organization of its kind. The Sports Consortium is an advisory committee and not a traditional local organizing committee that produces events. The members will focus on the greater good of the Oklahoma City metro area by providing an advisory resource for municipalities, analyzing the viability of large-scale sport and special events thereby enhancing the possibility of economic development. The Consortium can also collaborate with individual municipalities on their own special events.
"This is another great example of private industry, government and sports franchises coming together for the betterment of the Oklahoma City and its surrounding communities", said Bob Funk, Jr., Chairman of the Greater Oklahoma City Sports Consortium. "We are fortunate to live in a working community that is imaginative and forward thinking. The Sports Consortium will provide a platform for communication and collaboration between the various entities involved in sports and special events."
"The City Council of Oklahoma City looks forward to working with the Greater Oklahoma City Sports Consortium to bring the highest quality events to our great city," said Councilman Gary Marrs. "The ability for the most influential members of the sports and special events industry to work together can only mean continued positive steps for the ever-improving quality of life in Oklahoma City."
The 15-member board for the Greater Oklahoma City Sports Consortium includes permanent representatives from 12 of the most influential members in the sports and special event industry. The 12 permanent members of the board include: All Sports Association, Amateur Softball Association, City of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation, Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau, Oklahoma City RedHawks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma State Fair, Prodigal, SMG, and University of Central Oklahoma. Three at large members will complete the board.
"The Greater Oklahoma City area is very fortunate to have so many sports professionals who all want to pull on the same end of the rope," said Mike Carrier, Secretary. "From professional teams to NAIA and NCAA colleges, Olympic sports governing bodies to Olympic Gold Medalists, local organizing groups to event promoters and planners, our region has the full range of business professionals to help solicit and support virtually any type of sports programs. We see the new Sports Consortium as a unique blending of knowledge and talent to put the area at the head of the class when it comes to working with sports events rights holders who are looking for a location to host their events."
The organization will utilize board dues for administrative operations.
