Cleveland Monsters News Release

Rookie goalie Calvin Pickard's 25-save shutout - his and the team's fourth shutout of the season - carried the Lake Erie Monsters (27-23-2-7) to a 2-0 victory over the Peoria Rivermen (25-24-4-3) Tuesday at Quicken Loans Arena. David van der Gulik and Brian Sutherby scored for the Monsters, who snapped a two-game losing skid with the win. The Monsters and Peoria meet again Thursday evening, when the Monsters will conclude an eight-game home stand.

After a scoreless first period, Mike Sgarbossa's shot from the top of the left circle deflected off van der Gulik and into the Peoria net for the game's first goal at 11:48 of the second frame. The goal was credited to van der Gulik - his 17th of the season - and assisted by Sgarbossa and Luke Walker.

In the third period, Tyler McNeely backhanded a perfect pass to Sutherby in front of the Peoria net off a rush, and Sutherby tapped the puck over the line to give the Monsters a 2-0 lead on his first goal of the season. Dan Maggio also assisted on the goal at 6:47 of the third.

Pickard is 16-13-5 after stopping 25 of 25 shots in the win. Jake Allen took the loss in net for Peoria, stopping 19 of 21; he is 13-19-2.

The Monsters and Rivermen meet Thursday night at The Q, with the puck dropping at 7:00 PM.
