Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
In January, The Fighting Saints and Medical Associates teamed up to host Stick it to Cancer Weekend when the Fighting Saints hosted the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Together, the Saints and Medical Associates raised $11,327 for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
"As an organization, we strive to make as great an impact as possible off the ice in our great community," said Saints Vice President Casey Weitz. "We are so grateful to work with Medical Associates and Relay for Life and are thrilled at the response from our fans to be able to make such a donation to help so many people."
The Saints and Medical Associates set out with a goal of spreading awareness and raising funds that would make a difference in the lives of families battling cancer. Through the design of specialty jerseys, they organized a game-worn jersey auction at the end of Stick it to Cancer weekend to raise money for Relay for Life.
"The American Cancer Society continues to revolutionize cancer care, offering hope and healing to countless lives," remarked Dr. Eric Engelman, Oncologist and Hematologist at Medical Associates Clinic. "Their relentless pursuit of innovation has transformed treatment paradigms, ushering in therapies with heightened efficacy, diminished side effects, and enhanced quality of life for those battling this formidable disease. Witnessing the unwavering support for such a pivotal cause is truly uplifting.
Cancer is a disease that has a widespread effect on people's lives, including Saints head coach Kirk MacDonald. MacDonald is a cancer survivor, battling and beating the disease in 2005. Since, MacDonald has been an advocate for spreading awareness and increasing accessibility for cancer care.
"We are so grateful for the Dubuque Fighting Saints, Medical Associates and all the volunteers for coordinating the Stick it to Cancer event on behalf of the American Cancer Society," said Melanie Schmidt Brown of Iowa's American Cancer Society. "The funds raised from the game will go towards improving the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research and patient support to ensure that everyone in Dubuque has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat and survive cancer. We have a vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. From breakthrough research, free lodging near treatment, a 24/7/365 live helpline, free rides to treatment, and convening powerful activists to create awareness and impact, the American Cancer Society is improving the lives of people with cancer and their families."
