Swift Current Broncos News Release
SWIFT CURRENT, SK - After a five-game, 10-day road trip, the Swift Current Broncos (3-6-1-2) have returned to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex. They'll only be there for one game before heading on the road for another five games after hosting the Brandon Wheat Kings (5-8-0-0) Saturday night.
Tuesday the Broncos wrapped up their biennial British Columbia road trip, ending on a high note with a 7-2 drubbing of the Prince George Cougars.
The game was close after the opening period as Matthew Culling scored his first of the year with 1:50 remaining in the opening frame. The Cougars got two power plays to start the game and jumped out to an 8-0 lead on the shot clock, but Isaac Poulter held his ground.
Hayden Ostir scored his first as a Broncos early in the second which opened the flood gates. Hendrik De Klerk scored his first career goal two minutes later, ending the night for Cougars goaltender Taylor Gauthier who was pulled after allowing three goals on 10 shots.
His replacement, Tyler Brennan, didn't fare much better as Joona Kiviniemi scored just three minutes later to make it 4-0. Off the next face off, Aiden Bulych scored on a long shot from the left wing to make it 5-0 just 15 seconds later.
Kiviniemi capped off his hat trick in the third, first by scoring a highlight reel goal while on the power play and then with a slap shot from the left circle, on another power play. The Cougars scored twice in the third to make the final score 7-2.
The Wheat Kings are finishing a grueling seven-game, 13-day road trip which saw them make their way through the US Division.
It's been a rollercoaster trip so far as it began with a 3-2 loss in Everett before a 3-2 overtime win in Seattle two nights later. The following night they lost 4-1 in Portland before a 10-2 dominating performance over the Tri-City Americans three nights after.
The next game it was the Wheat Kings turn to get blown out as they lost 7-1 in Spokane. Friday night they play in Lethbridge before making their way to Swift Current to finish off the trip.
The Wheat Kings were one of the few teams the Broncos had success against last season, winning two of the four meetings. Swift Current's next two games are against Brandon as they'll be on the road for their first Manitoba trip next weekend.
