Pre-Game Report: MetroStars @ Columbus Crew

Let the 2004 Season Begin: The MetroStars kickoff the 2004 MLS season this Saturday, April 3 against the Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. ET at Crew Stadium in Columbus, OH (TV: FSNY; Radio: WADO 1280 AM). The Metros hold a 12-15-1 record against the Crew all-time including a 2-1-1 record in 2003.

The MetroStars will then set their sights on their 2004 home opener against arch-rival D.C. United and 14-year-old phenom Freddy Adu on Saturday, April 17 at 4:00 p.m. ET at Giants Stadium (TV: ESPN2; Radio: WADO 1280 AM). Tickets are available at the Continental Airlines Arena box office and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets will also be available through Ticketmaster by phone for callers in New Jersey (201-507-8900), New York (212-307-7171), and for Spanish-speaking customers throughout New York and New Jersey (212-307-4757).

Season Kickoff Party: Nevada Smith's will be hosting the MetroStars first away game viewing party on Saturday, April 3 against the Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. ET. Nevada Smith's is located at 74 Third Ave. between 11th & 12th Streets in New York, NY. Representatives of the MetroStars organization will be in attendance and there will be raffles and other prizes available.

Metros are the Youngest: At the start of the 2004 Major League Soccer season on Saturday, the MetroStars will be the youngest team in MLS at 24 years, 39 days. The second youngest team in the league is Chicago at 24 years, 170 days.

Metros Around the World: Four members of the MetroStars competed in games for their respective national teams this week. Goalkeeper Jonny Walker served as back-up to Brad Friedel in the United States' 1-0 win over Poland on Wednesday in Plock, Poland. Walker has earned two appearances for the U.S. with both coming in 2004. The California native earned his first cap on January 18, 2004, when he started in a 1-1 draw with Denmark at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.

Midfielder Amado Guevara and defender Craig Ziadie faced-off against each other when Honduras tied Jamaica, 2-2, on Wednesday in Kingston, Jamaica. Guevara played the entire game and is the all-time appearance leader for Honduras with 78 caps, adding 15 goals for Bora Milutinovic's squad. "El Lobo" made his debut for the nation on May 5, 1994, in a 2-1 win over Peru in Miami, FL. Ziadie played the full game and has earned 19 caps for the Reggae Boyz, since making his international debut on November 20, 2002, vs. Japan in a 1-1 tie in Tokyo.

Midfielder Joselito Vaca started and played all 90 minutes for the Bolivian National Team in a 2-0 loss to Chile in a 2006 World Cup Qualifier on Tuesday, March 30 in La Paz, Bolivia. Vaca has earned 12 caps with Bolivia, which is currently in last place in the 10-team South American qualifying group with one win, four losses and no ties (1-4-0) for three points. Chile sits in fifth place with a 2-2-1 record for seven points. Argentina leads South America with a 3-0-2 mark for 11 points.

Newly acquired forward Cornell Glen entered in the 38th minute for Trinidad & Tobago in a 2-1 loss to Egypt in Cairo on Wednesday. Glen has earned 12 caps with the "Soca Warriors."

Metros Acquire Cornell Glen: The MetroStars acquired Trinidad and Tobago National Team forward Cornell Glen with an allocation from Trinidadian club CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh. Glen becomes the team's third transitional international, joining Bolivian Joselito Vaca and Jamaican Fabian Taylor. The deal comes one day ahead of the FIFA-imposed transfer window, which closes on Wednesday, March 31 for MLS teams. He will join the "Red and Black" once his Visa is approved.

The 22-year-old Glen has earned 12 caps with the Trinidad and Tobago National Team since making his first appearance with the full team on November 15, 2002, in a 2-0 win over St. Kitts and Nevis in a 2003 Gold Cup Qualifier.

On the club level, Glen has spent the last two years with CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh of the Trinidad and Tobago First Division. He led the team to two consecutive league championships in 2002 and 2003 to mark the only titles in team history, scoring 26 goals in 2003 and 11 in 2002. Jabloteh won the 2002 championship with a record of 19 wins, 12 ties, and two losses for 65 points, then won in 2003 with a 29-5-2 mark for a staggering 92 points and scoring 113 goals. Glen also spent two years with Adsanjonese in Portugal after joining the team from Jabloteh.

Glen scored a first half hat trick and registered an assist on another goal on March 17 against the Chicago Fire to carry Jabloteh to a 5-2 win, in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup Quarterfinal series in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Metros Land the "King of Goals": The MetroStars acquired Argentine forward Sergio Galvan Rey with an allocation from Colombian club Once Caldas last week. Galvan Rey becomes the league maximum third senior international for the Metros, joining Honduran midfielder Amado Guevara and Ugandan defender Tenywa Bonseu. The deal comes days ahead of the FIFA-imposed transfer window, which closes on Wednesday, March 31 for MLS teams.

The 30-year-old Galvan Rey has scored 171 goals (160 league goals and 11 in Copa Libertadores) in his eight years with Once Caldas in the Colombian first division and Copa Libertadores. The native of Concepcion, Argentina scored two goals against Argentine heavyweight Velez Sarsfield and Paraguayan goalkeeping legend Jose Luis Chilavert on March 17 to give them a 2-0 win.

The 5'8", 145-pound leaves Once Caldas in first-place in the prestigious South American competition with a 3-1-0 record for nine points in Group 2. He helped the team win their first Colombia league title in 53 years last year when they finished with 15 wins, three losses, and eight ties to put them 13 points clear of second-place Junior.

Nicknamed "The King of Goals," since his name "Rey" means "king" in Spanish, he was born in Argentina, but also holds Colombian citizenship. He is a product of the world-renowned Boca Juniors youth system in Argentina.

MetroStars Sign Gilberto Flores: The MetroStars acquired Brazilian midfielder Gilberto Flores (pronounced: JILL-bear-toe) as a developmental player from Ginasio Pinhalense de Esportes Atlético just prior to the FIFA-imposed transfer window deadline on Wednesday, March 31. Flores becomes the team's fourth transitional international, joining Bolivian Joselito Vaca, Jamaican Fabian Taylor and Trinidadian Cornell Glen. He will join the "Red and Black" next week.

The 20-year-old Flores participated in preseason with the MetroStars in La Manga, Murcia, Spain at the 2004 La Manga Cup helping the Metros win the tournament. The 5'9", 160-pound midfielder played in three games at the tournament, logging 83 minutes. Flores also started and played the entire game for the Metros in a 0-0 tie with Real Murcia of the Spanish Primera Division at La Manga Club Resort.

The native of Toledo, Brazil has played for Ginasio Pinhalense de Esportes Atlético (2003-2004), Desportiva FC (2003), Ituano FC (2002), Sao Paulo FC (2002), and Toledo FC (1998-2001) in Brazil.

2003 Rewind: The MetroStars' 2004 season opener marks the second consecutive year the "Red and Black" will begin their campaign against the rival Crew. Last year's game ended in a heart-breaking 1-0 loss for the Metros at Giants Stadium when Crew forward Jeff Cunningham scored a last-second goal. The Metros hold a 3-5-0 record in season openers.

Longest Standing: Midfielder Mark Lisi and defender Craig Ziadie are the longest standing MetroStars on the 2004 squad. The duo joined the Metros on May 9, 2002, in a trade with D.C. United in exchange for Orlando Perez and Petter Villegas.

Parke Ranger: Rookie Defender Jeff Parke was acquired by the MetroStars with the last selection in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft (60th overall selection and 10th in the sixth round). The Drexel University product has burst onto the Metros' roster and scored the game-winning goal in the team's 1-0 win in the 2004 La Manga Cup Final in Spain over Viking FK of Norwary.

Bradley at the Top: MetroStars Head Coach Bob Bradley has earned 93 career regular season victories in his MLS head-coaching career. The New Jersey native stands above the other coaches in league history with Los Angeles' Sigi Schmid being the closest active coach with 70 wins. Bradley took the all-time coaching lead with his 83rd on April 26 at Columbus in a 1-0 win. That win moved him to the top of the all-time MLS win chart, surpassing Thomas Rongen (DC, NE, TB) with 82.

David Kammarman Added to Coaching Staff: MetroStars Head Coach Bob Bradley has named David Kammarman the team's new Assistant Coach and Manager of Soccer Operations. The native of Laurel, Maryland enters his ninth season in Major League Soccer after spending time with D.C. United, the Chicago Fire and the MetroStars. He spent the 2003 season with the MetroStars as the team's equipment manager. A graduate of the University of Delaware in 1994 with a major in Political Science, Kammarman played all four years for the Fighting Blue Hens with his twin brother Michael and acted as the team's captain for his senior season in 1993. He spent the summer of 1995 playing for the Harbord Diggers in Australia. He joined D.C. United in the summer of 1996 as a media relations consultant, where he stayed through the 1997 season. Also in 1997, he acted as an assistant coach at his alma matter for Head Coach Marc Samonisky. During 1998, Kammarman was a member of the Delaware Wizards of the D-3 Pro league (USL). In 1998, he made the switch to working in the equipment room at D.C., where he stayed until April of 1999 when he joined the Chicago Fire as the equipment manager. He worked in that capacity until the end of the 2002 season. David is married to Meaghan and the couple resides in New Jersey. His brother Michael is currently the U.S. Men's National Team Press Officer.

MetroStars Tie Colorado, 2-2: The MetroStars played to a 2-2 draw with the Colorado Rapids in front of 4,204 fans in their final preseaon match of the year at the Virgil T. Blossom Athletic Center, in San Antonio, Texas. The Metros rallied from a two-goal deficit after Mike Nugent and Mike Magee scored goals in the 58th and 70th minutes. Midfielder Mark Lisi assisted on both tallies to bring the MetroStars preseason record to 5-3-4.
