PEARL, MS -- The Atlanta Braves have signed free agent first baseman Rich Poythress and assigned him to Double-A Mississippi. In corresponding moves, RHP Yunesky Maya was placed on the temporary inactive list.

Poythress, 26, joins the M-Braves from Double-A Jacksonville. With the Suns, the first baseman was hitting .244 with six doubles, four homers and 17 RBI in 46 games. Prior to joining the Marlins organization, Poythress spent parts of 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013 with the Jackson Generals. He was originally selected by the Seattle Mariners in the second round of the 2009 draft out of the University of Georgia.

Maya, 31, was 3-3 with a 2.63 ERA in 17 games at Triple-A Gwinnett. He made three relief appearances before joining the Gwinnett starting rotation in mid-April. Maya posted his best numbers during the month of June when he went 2-1 with a 1.37 ERA in six starts for the G-Braves. Maya has spent parts of three seasons (2010-11, 13) in the big leagues with the Nationals (1-5, 5.80). The Cuban was signed by the Braves as a minor-league free agent on December 6, 2013.

The Mississippi roster has 25 active players, 6 disabled and 1 inactive.
