THE LEAD OFF: West VirginiaÂfs game at Delmarva was postponed last night and the clubs will plat two doubleheaders in the next two days. The Power lost 4-1 on Sunday to Hagerstown. Tyler Glasnow struck out eight over four and two-thirds, but the Power offense could not provide an run support. In the top of the sixth, the Suns capitalized on two Power errors and plated four runs against reliever Jhondaniel Medina. Walker Gourley hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning for West VirginiaÂfs only offensive tally.
THE CHASE CONTINUES: The Power enter play tonight in third place; two games behind Hickory and a game and a half game back of Hagerstown in the Northern Division after all three clubs were rained out last night. West Virginia has eight games remaining during the first half of the 2013 season. The Power will play four in Delmarva over the next three days before a trip to North Carolina to take on Greensboro to close out the half. Hagerstown and Hickory play four times before Lakewood comes in. The Crawdads finish their first half at home against the Shorebirds.
DOZEN VS. DELMARVA: West Virginia will open itsÂf first of two 2013 series on the Delmarva Peninsula tonight. The Shorebirds lead the all-time set 55-54 after last WednesdayÂfs rain-suspended, rain-shortened 1-0 victory. The Power have struggled on the road in this series, having won 19 times in 45 games at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland. The Power and Shorebirds will meet for a total of 12 games this year.
DOUBLE DIP: The Power and Shorebirds will play two games tonight to make up the June 6 game scheduled for Appalachian Power Park that was postponed due to rain. WednesdayÂfs doubleheader will begin at 5:05 pm and will serve as the make-up date for last nightÂfs postponement.
TOUGH LUCK LOSS: Joely Rodriguez will make his league-best 13th start this evening. Rodriguez pitched on Wednesday against Delmarva at Appalachian Power Park in a game suspended after three innings by inclement weather. The southpaw allowed just one run on two hits while striking out two and took the loss.
GO ON GOURLEY: Walker GourleyÂfs hitting streak is now at seven games after a his solo home run Sunday. The utility man has reached on at least one hit in 40 of his 49 games played this season, including 19 of his last 21.
ALL-STAR POWER: West Virginia had six players selected to represent the club in the 2013 South Atlantic League All-Star Game, including three starters. Stetson Allie will play first base, Josh Bell will start in right field, and Dilson Herrera was selected as the starting shortstop. Walker Gourley was chosen as a reserve outfielder, while pitchers Orlando Castro and Tyler Glasnow were also selected to represent the Power. West Virginia, Hickory, Hagerstown, and Augusta each had six players selected by the leagueÂfs managers, coaches, general managers, and media.
ALUMNI WATCH: Multiple reports have suggested that Nick Kingham will be promoted to Altoona. The right-hander was named as a Florida State League All-Star this year after striking out 117 last year with West Virginia, third most in a single Power season. Kingham is 6-3 this year with a 3.09 ERA and a league-high 71 strikeouts.
PROMO UPDATE- JULY 4- The Power will host the Lexington Legends on July 4 at 6:05 pm. The game will be followed by a fireworks show and a concert by the Davisson Brothers Band.
POWER POINTS: Junior Sosa was promoted back to Bradenton on Thursday when Barrett Barnes was activated from the disabled list... SaturdayÂfs shutout was the fifth by the Power staff this season. West Virginia pitchers also combined on their second two-hitter this season (5/17/13 vs. Lexington)...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was idle Monday and will take on the San Francisco Giants at PNC Park tonight. Gerrit Cole is slated to make his MLB debut... Indianapolis was tripped up 2-1 by Norfolk... Altoona was off Monday and plays at New Britain tonight... BradentonÂfs game with Lakeland was suspended in the fourth inning.
