Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 11, 2013) -- The Augusta GreenJackets pulled away from the Kannapolis Intimidators to take Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader, 9-3 (F/7), at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. The GreenJackets scored two runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings en route to the win.
Ben Turner paced Augusta's offense, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Alberto Robles also collected three hits, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of doubles.
GreenJackets starter Joan Gregorio earned the win, working 6.0 innings for the fourth time in six starts this season. Gregorio (3-0) scattered eight hits while holding the Intimidators to three runs.
Kannapolis struck for two runs on four singles in the home half of the first inning for an early 2-0 lead. Jason Coats and Michael Johnson came through with a pair of two-out hits to score Jake Brown and Michael Marjama.
The GreenJackets cut the Intimidators lead in half, 2-1, when Turner led off the second inning with a home run (1) to left field.
Augusta jumped in front with two runs in the fourth inning. Shayne Houck and Turner singled to get aboard, and Andrew Cain walked to load the bases. Chuckie Jones tied the game, 2-2, with a sac-fly to right field, and Robles legged out an infield single to cash Turner for the go-ahead run.
Intimidators starter Jefferson Olacio gave up back to back base hits to open the fifth inning before a wild pitch gave the GreenJackets a 4-2 lead. Joe Rapp ended Olacio's evening with an RBI-single for a 5-2 edge. Adam Lopez came in and stranded two inherited runners to end the fifth.
Olacio (2-8) gave up five runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking one in the loss. Lopez worked 2 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on three hits.
Jake Brown chipped away at Augusta's lead with a two-out triple in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Juan Ramirez, but Kannapolis would not score again.
