Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Hickory, NC- May 15, 2013)- The West Virginia Power fell 8-7 to the Hickory Crawdads Wednesday at L.P. Frans Stadium. The Power scored three times in the ninth to rally back from a 6-3 deficit and took a 7-6 lead in the top of the tenth before Hickory capitalized on a throwing error to comeback in walk-off with a win.
West Virginia took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. D.J. Crumlich walked and moved to third on a hit-and-run with Walker Gourley at the plate. With two outs, Raul Fortunato singled to center to bring home Crumlich. Lewis Brinson threw the ball to third in attempt to get Gourley moving across the diamond. Third basemen Joey Gallo left the bag to field the throw and attempted to toss to second to get Fortunato trying to advance another base. Gallo's throw bounced into right field, allowing both Gourley and Fortunato to score.
Hickory answered with two runs in the bottom of the second, tied the game with a solo home run from Ryan Rua in the third to tie the score, and took the lead in the fifth on a solo home run by Nick Vickerson. Gallo and David Lyon each hit home runs over the next two innings to build a 6-3 Crawdads lead.
In the top of the ninth, Crumlich singled and scored on a double by Gourley to cut the deficit down to two. Jonathan Schwind reached on a throwing error by shortstop Luis Marte. With runners on the corners, Fortunato singled to center to bring in Gourley. One out later, Ashley Ponce reached on an infield single to score Schwind to tie the game at six.
After retiring the side in order in the bottom of the ninth, the Power took the lead in the top of the tenth as Stetson Allie scored on a Crumlich sacrifice fly for a 7-6 edge. In the home half of the inning, however, Gallo doubled and Rua walked to put the tying and winning runs aboard. Tom Harlan, who pitched two scoreless innings prior to the tenth, induced a pop out and was relieved by Kyle Haynes. Jordan Akins grounded a potential double play ball back to Haynes, but the pitcher's throw to second went in to center field to allow Gallo to score and tie the game. Lyon followed with a single up the middle to bring in the winning run.
Harlan (2-1) took the loss while Haynes was charged with a blown save. Joe Burns (1-0) allowed the run in the top of the tenth but still notched the win.
West Virginia returns to Appalachian Power Park on Thursday, April 16, to host Lexington for a four-game homestand. For tickets or more information, call 304-344-2287 or visit www.wvpower.com .
