Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

The Charleston Riverdogs defeated the Savannah SandGnats 3-2 Tuesday night in a closely fought contest. The Riverdogs (20-15) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first with C Peter O'Brien's two-run single. Sand Gnats starting pitcherGabiel Ynoa, settled down nicely after the two-run first inning by yielding just three hits throughout the rest of 6 1/3 innings.

The Gnats (21-15) clawed back offensively to tie the game 2-2 with RBI singles in the third and sixth innings by 3B Cole Frenzel. Frenzel's 2 RBI gives him 13 for the season.

Both teams squandered scoring opportunities in the seventh inning and went down in order in their halves of the eighth inning.

The Gnats forced the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, but failed to take advantage. That left the door open for the Riverdogs to capitalize on a bases loaded 9th inning. LF Kelvin De Leon hit the game-winning sac fly, scoring the man who was everywhere Tuesday night for the Riverdogs, Peter O'Brien. Relief pitcherBeck Wheeler (0-2) was tagged with the loss for the Gnats.

The Sand Gnats continue the series in Charleston on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm where Savannah's Steven Matz(2-0, 1.85) takes on Charleston's Cesar Vargas (1-1, 4.28).
