Power Play Dooms RiverKings in Road Trip Wind Up

FORT WAYNE, IN --- A potent power play keyed the attack as the Fort Wayne Komets defeated the Mississippi RiverKings 6-1 in Central Hockey League action Sunday afternoon, January 16th in Indiana. Despite the loss, the RiverKings finished their latest five-game road trip winning three out of the five and now have nine-game homestand coming up, starting Tuesday night against Bossier-Shreveport.

Fort Wayne opened the scoring quickly in the first four minutes of the contest. Frankie DeAngelis scored on the Komets' first power play chance of the night, netting his 8th goal of the season and fifth on the power play for a 1-0 lead at 2:02. Shortly after that, Fort Wayne added to the lead with a goal from Tab Lardner at 4:11, his 11th of the season for a 2-0 advantage which became the first intermission score.

The Komets continued to press the issue in the second period, scoring four goals, three on the power play. P.C. Droiun's power play goal at 2:16 made it 3-0, followed by Dan Lapointe's power play goal at 11:56 to make 4-0. Fort Wayne made it 5-0 at 17:09 on a goal from Kaleigh Schrock, and it became 6-0 with Tab Lardner's second goal of the game at 18:29.

Mississippi avoided the shutout in the third period on a power play goal from Jeff Christian, his tenth goal of the season and fifth power play red-lighter.

The RiverKings out shot the Komets by a 38-26 margin for the game. Larry Sterling (8-7-1) took the loss with eleven saves in forty minutes of work. Alexander Pechurskiy played the third period and stopped all nine Fort Wayne shots sent his way. Kevin Reiter won for just the third time (3-7-1), stopping 37 of 38 RiverKings shots.

Fort Wayne scored four time on the power play in six chances, while Mississippi was 1-for-7 with the man advantage.

With the loss, the RiverKings fall to 18-18-1 for the season and are in sixth place in the Berry Conference standings. Fort Wayne moved to 12-16-5 with the victory.

Next home action for the RiverKings will be on Tuesday, January 18th, against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs at the DeSoto Civic Center. Game time is 7:05 PM and Hockey For Humanity is the night's featured non-profit MVP.
