Power Play Comes up Big as Chiefs Notch First Win, 5-1 over Tri-City

Kennewick, Wash. - Forward Bear Hughes posted three points for the second-straight night and rookie forward Yannick Proske pitched in his first goal in the WHL as the Spokane Chiefs pulled away for their first win of the season, 5-1 over the Tri-City Americans on Saturday night in Kennewick. Spokane's power play was the difference as they went 3-for-6 with the man advantage.

It was Tri-City who found the net first as highly-regarded defenseman Lukas Dragicevic took advantage of a turnover before snapping a hard shot past goalie Campbell Arnold to make it 1-0 late in the first period.

The Chiefs responded in force during the second period, scoring four goals including two on the power play.

Hughes, after posting a goal and two assists at home against Seattle on Friday, scored back-to-back at 0:28 and 8:26 (PP) to give the Chiefs the lead. Luke Toporowski continued his hot start to the season, scoring his fourth goal to make it 3-1 at 10:25. Team captain Jack Finley earned the primary assist with a beautiful pass from behind the net on the man advantage.

Finally, Yannick Proske wrapped up the second with a bow as he drove the left wing and flipped a perfect shot past goalie Talyn Boyko's glove hand to score his first career WHL goal.

Spokane capped the scoring at 2:59 of the third as defenseman Graham Sward fired a power play shot from the point that found its way through traffic to push the lead to 5-1.

The Chiefs outshot the Americans 26-25 on the night, finishing 3-for-6 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill. They head to Portland for a Sunday 5 p.m. matinee and the second of five-straight games on the road.
