Hughes' Big Night Not Enough for Chiefs Versus T-Birds

Spokane, Wash. - Washington Capitals prospect Bear Hughes had three points on Friday night but it wasn't enough as the Spokane Chiefs were defeated by the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds, 5-3.

Spokane got on the board first at 4:14 of the first period as Las Vegas native Erik Atchison scored on a rebound. Post Falls, Idaho native Hughes created the initial chance and was nearly hit by the Atchison's shot as he slid into the back of the net after the first shot.

Seattle responded midway through the period as Italian winger Alessandro Segafredo scored his first WHL goal unassisted at 9:59. The teams headed to the first intermission tied, 1-1.

Hughes found the net himself in the second period, scoring a rare 5-on-3 shorthanded goal with a perfectly placed shot over goaltender Thomas Milic's left shoulder.

The final two minutes of the middle frame spelled disaster for Spokane as the Thunderbirds scored twice. Lucas Ciona potted his first of the season at 18:31 before Reid Schaefer scored his second of the year at 18:58 to put Seattle up 3-2 headed into the break.

Spokane tied it up with a power play goal by Luke Toporowski -- his third goal in three games -- at 12:20 of the third, with Hughes earning his third point of the . The momentum was short-lived however, as Thunderbirds captain Tyrel Bauer hit his mark at 13:06 to retake the lead for the visitors at 4-3. Veteran forward Conner Roulette added insurance at 17:26 to cap the scoring.

Spokane outshot Seattle 34-31 on the night, going 1-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. The Chiefs head to Kennewick on Saturday to face the rival Tri-City Americans.
