Eastlake, OH (May 25, 2009) - The West Virginia Power used a 16-hit attack and a six-run third inning to defeat the Lake County Captains at Classic Park on Monday afternoon as they took the series finale 10-5.
West Virginia plated the first run of the contest in the top of the second as Jeremy Farrell scored on Erik Huber's two-out double. The Power sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times on four hits in the third. Chase D'Arnaud's groundout plated the first run before Bobby Spain and Huber ripped two-out RBI singles. Andrew Walker capped the big inning with a three-run triple.
Walker struck again two innings later on a two-run double, giving the Power a 9-0 lead. The Captains used three singles to plate three runs in the sixth inning. Chris Nash brought in two runs on his base-knock and scored on a single from Michael Valadez. Mark Thompson brought the Captains within four on a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh. Bobby Spain brought in West Virginia's tenth run of the game when he bounced into a 5-4-3 double play in the eighth. The Captains plated their final run in the ninth when Abner Abreu walked with the bases loaded.
Rudy Owens (5-1) kept the Captains off the board through five scoreless innings of one-hit ball and struck out eight to get the victory. Danny Salazar (1-2) allowed seven runs on six hits over two and two-thirds and was tagged with the loss.
West Virginia improved to 17-27 after the win, and the Captains fell to 19-24 with the loss. Erik Huber paced the Power with a 4-for-5 performance. It was his second four hit game this season. The 16 hits are a season best for the Power. Every batter reached multiple times and eight of the starting nine hit safely. Robbie Grossman was the only batter that didn't hit, but he walked four times.
West Virginia will begin a four game series with the Lakewood BlueClaws at First Energy Park on Tuesday night. Right hander Kyle McPherson (3-1, 5.79) will start for the Power and the BlueClaws will counter with right hander Jesus Sanchez (1-3, 4.89). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
