Walla Walla Sweets News Release
Yakima, Wa- The Walla Walla Sweets (12-13) dropped game one to the Yakima Valley Pippins (15-10) by a score of 6-1. The game began with a pitcher's duel and ended with the Pippins pulling away.
The starting pitchers for both teams dazzled as neither side picked up a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. The starter for the Sweets, Cooper Powell, retired the first thirteen batters he faced before giving up a single.
The Sweets graced the scoreboard first in the sixth. Jon Hechtner led off the inning with a walk and was advanced to second when Kyle Dozier singled to increase his hitting streak to 10 games. Clayton Ayers then tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but reached first when the pitcher, Darrion Simons, bobbled the ball. With the bases loaded, Kyle Nixon grounded out to short and that brought Hechtner in to score.
The Pippins would strike right back in the bottom half of the same frame. Branson Trube reached on a one out walk and after Corey Morris was called out on batter's interference, the Pippins banged out three straight hits that brought in two runs. That made the score 2-1 Yakima Valley.
That score would remain until the Pippins would add four more on in the eighth to make the score 6-1.
