July 4, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release
Yakima, Wa- The Sweets (13-13) got an excellent start from Micah Gorman on the mound and that lead to a victory over Yakima Valley (15-11) that tied the series at one. The Sweets put up some runs for Gorman as well, winning 7-1.
The scoring started in the second when Kyle Nixon scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom half of the frame, the Pippins tied it up with a two-out double by Tyler Mildenberg and an RBI single that scored him by David Becker.
The score was tied at one heading into the third. That was where the Sweets would break it and never look back. In the top of the frame, they added a run on an RBI sacrifice fly by Connor Kopach to score Parker Coss, but it was the following inning where they would explode.
In the fourth, Juan Gamez reached third on an error by the third baseman Mitch Skaggs. It was one of four errors that the Pippins committed on the day. The very next batter, Matt Whitney, grounded a ball through the right side to score Gamez and that made the score 3-1. Alex McKenna then followed that with his first single as a Sweet and after a Willie MacIver fly out to center, Dyllin Mucha lined an RBI single of his own to score Whitney. Coss would drive in McKenna on a single to follow that and Kyle Dozier added an RBI sacrifice fly as well to make the score 6-1 Sweets.
That score would hold until the eighth inning when MacIver sliced an RBI double into right-center field that scored Matt Whitney.
Micah Gorman came back out in the ninth and faced the minimum, despite giving up a single. He was the beneficiary of three double plays behind him and only stranded one runner on the day. He ended the day with a ground out to second to pick his first complete game on the season and the second for the Sweets on the year.
The Sweets and the Pippins will match up again tomorrow at 7:05pm for a rubber game in this series. They will see each other for three more games in Walla Walla immediately following this series.
