Powell Breaks 12-Year Old Lightning Record

March 13, 2006 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1)
Rockford Lightning News Release

With 0:31 remaining in the game on Sunday afternoon, Roger Powell hit two free throws to break Kendrick Warren's Lightning rookie scoring record with 1,013 points in his first season.

Warren set the record back in the 1994-95 season when he averaged 18.1 points a game as a rookie over 56 games. Powell averaged 21.1 points per game (third highest in the CBA) over 48 games this season, and finished with 1,013 points in his first season out of the University of Illinois.

"This is a great honor," said Powell. "I needed 37 points going into the final game of the season, and that is exactly how many I finished with. My favorite bible verse is ‘I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength'. Yesterday was a perfect example of that verse playing itself out." Over his career with the Fighting Illini, Powell would write that bible verse on the shoes that he would wear during the games.

Powell has led the Lightning in scoring 17 times this season. He finished with 10 double-doubles and tallied a season-high 37 points in the final game of the season to eclipse Kendrick Warren's record of 1,012 by one point. He pulled down a season-best 15 rebounds on Dec. 3 vs. Idaho. Powell finished the season ranked third in scoring (21.1 ppg), twelfth in rebounds (6.7 pg), third in offensive rebounds (3.3 pg), and fifth in field goal percentage (57.0%).

"Roger deserves it," said Lightning Head Coach Chris Daleo, "He is a good kid and one of the hardest workers in this league."

The Lightning will travel to Yakama in a rematch with the Sun Kings on Tuesday night at 9:05 P.M. (CST). They will then return home to face the Idaho Stampede at 7:05 P.M. on Thursday, March 16th at the MetroCentre. The Lightning's first round finishes on Monday, March 20th with Rockford traveling to Sioux Falls in a rematch of last season's CBA finals at 7:05 P.M. The two teams with the highest quarter point average in the first round will face off in the 2006 CBA finals. Dates for the finals will be determined following the first round games and pending arena availability for each team. For Lightning playoff tickets call the MetroCentre box office at 815-968-5222.
