Potomac Powers Past Winston-Salem in Opener

Winston-Salem, NC - Potomac took advantage of the hitter-friendly fences at Wake Forest Baseball Park to the tune of five home runs in a 12-4 rout of Winston-Salem in the series opener on Friday night. Five different National batters collected round-trippers and everyone in the lineup registered a hit as Potomac extended their winning streak to eight games by claiming the series opener.

Potomac's power display started early as Danny Espinosa lifted an opposite field two-run home run off Anthony Carter in the first inning to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead. The Dash cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by left fielder Christian Marrero.

The P-Nats homer barrage continued in the third as Potomac built a 9-1 lead aided by three home runs in the inning. Francisco Plasencia led off with a solo shot and Stephen King and Dan Lyons belted three-run blasts to help Potomac pull away.

The Dash scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning with center fielder Jordan Danks collecting an RBI single and third baseman Brent Morel scoring Salvador Sanchez with a ground out. Sanchez tallied a Dash season-high three doubles in the game.

Sean Rooney, who finished with a season-high four hits, capped off the Potomac home run party with a solo shot off Hector Santiago in the ninth inning. Potomac starting pitcher Erik Arnesen limited Winston-Salem to two runs (one earned) on five hits in 6.1 innings to garner the win. It is his second consecutive win over the Dash.

Carter (2-3) only lasted three innings and surrendered nine runs on 10 hits to suffer the loss. He surrendered four home runs in his shortest outing of the season. The lone bright spot on the mound for Winston-Salem was reliever Wander Perez. The southpaw worked a season-high three innings and held Potomac scoreless on one hit with four strikeouts.

The Dash and Nationals square off in game two of this three-game series on Saturday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Winston-Salem will send RHP Levi Maxwell (0-4, 6.00) to the mound, while Potomac will turn to LHP Tom Milone (1-2, 3.86). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
