Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
KINSTON, SC - The Pelicans took an early lead which appeared to be a safe lead behind Pelicans starter Erik Cordier who threw five shutout innings but didn't factor into the decision. The Pelicans bullpen would end up allowing nine late runs resulting in the 9-3 loss.
The Pelicans struck first in the top of the first after Jon Mark Owings reached on an error by Kinston third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall to continue the inning. The next batter, Cody Johnson, ripped a single through the right side of the infield which plated Cole Miles and Freddie Freeman and gave the birds a 2-0 lead.
That's how it stayed as Cordier and Kinston starter Paulo Espino traded zeros through the fifth. Each team went to the bullpen in the sixth and Kinston capitalized scoring three times in the inning off Michael Broadway to take a 3-2 lead. Matt Brown tripled home two runs with a man out, then he scored on a sacrifice fly by John Allman. Broadway (0-3) ended up taking the loss after allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning.
The K-Tribe added another pair of runs on a two-run double by Chisenhall in the seventh off Carlos Rivas. Kinston got four more runs in the top of the eighth off Tim Gustafson. Chen-Chang Lee (2-2) got credited with the win, pitching two innings while allowing just one hit and striking out four. Kyle Landis (1) pitched the final two innings to earn the save.
Jason Heyward homered to begin the ninth for the Pelicans for his fourth of the season. The series continues Saturday as left hander Richard Sullivan opposes lefty Ryan Miller in game two of three at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, NC. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
