Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LYNCHBURG, VA - Looking to avenge their 6-5 loss in the first game of a Thursday doubleheader with the Lynchburg Hillcats, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans instead turned in a much similar result in a 5-4 loss in game two at Lynchburg City Stadium.

The Pelicans got out on top early trying to achieve the doubleheader split and salvage what ended up being the finale of a three-game series originally slated to be four games. An error charged to Hillcats third baseman Pedro Alvarez allowed his Pelicans counterpart Donell Linares to reach in the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman advanced Linares to third and scored him respectively to give the Birds an early 1-0 lead.

Lynchburg atoned for Alvarez's error by plating a run in the bottom of the first on another error, this one charged to Pelicans second baseman Michael Fisher. Fisher's miscue came on a ball hit by Lynchburg's Matt Hague and scored Jose De Los Santos who had singled to open the Hillcats half of the frame.

Myrtle Beach reclaimed the lead in the second inning with a Benji Johnson walk followed by a Chad Lundahl RBI double. The Pelicans added another pair of runs in the fourth as Fisher made up for his earlier mistake with a two-out, two-run double to left field past a diving Jared Keel to put the Birds up 4-1.

Pelicans starter Jeff Locke (1-2) didn't run into trouble again until the fifth when Lynchburg cashed in a one-out triple by De Los Santos on a Jordy Mercer single. In the sixth, with the Pelicans leading 4-2, Lynchburg again flexed its comeback muscle, loading the bases with four consecutive singles off Locke and scoring a pair of runs to tie the game on Kent Sakamoto's bases-loaded knock. That hit chased the Pelicans lefty, and a sacrifice fly by De Los Santos off Pelicans reliever Jose Ortegano plated Keel to give the Hillcats the 5-4 lead and the eventual win. The Pelicans took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the final inning in game one of the doubleheader only to see Lynchburg take that contest in walkoff fashion.

Hillcats reliever Michael Colla (1-0) recorded the last out of the sixth inning before Lynchburg's rally, and it was enough to earn his first win of the season. Michael Dubee (S,1) relieved him and tossed a scoreless seventh for his first save of the year.

Five straight losses for the Pelicans spell the club's longest losing streak of the 2009 season. The Birds head to Kinston for the next three games on their longest road trip of the year, kicking off the series Friday night at 7 o'clock. The Pelicans return home to face the Potomac Nationals for the first time this year at BB&T Coastal Field on Friday, May 15. Tickets are still available by calling the Pelicans box office at (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
