Brockton Rox News Release
QUEBECY CITY, QUEBEC - (August 27, 2009) - After establishing a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning, the Brockton Rox held on for a 6-5 victory over the Quebec Capitales, to earn a four-game split on Thursday night at Le Stade Municipal.
This game marked the final regular-season matchup between the two ballclubs, and it did not settle much, as the teams split the year's 20 matchups evenly at ten wins apiece.
Brockton scored in the top of the first after SS Dominic Ramos led off the game with a double, and was then plated on a two-out RBI single by DH Palmer Karr. The Rox tacked on three more in the fifth inning as Karr capped that inning with his second RBI single of the night.
The Capitales would answer in the bottom of the fifth with three runs of their own, including a two-run double by DH Douglas Toro. Quebec would subsequently tie the game in the sixth inning on an RBI triple by SS Tony Lewis.
Rox starter LHP Craig Anderson went the first six innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Quebec's RHP Michel Simard, who was working with a pitch limit, left after just 4.1 innings as the Capitales are attempting to align their pitching staff for the playoffs.
Brockton would break the 4-4 tie in the eighth inning off of reliever RHP Sean Gregory with two runs on two hits. 3B Phillip Cuadrado brought home the first run with a single, and then LF Jud Thigpen would add a sacrifice-fly RBI to make it 6-4 Brockton.
RHP Keith Noe, who had pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning, was in line for the victory as RHP Jerry Dunn came on for the save opportunity in the ninth. Dunn would allow an unearned run to score to close the Rox lead to 6-5, but he was able to get power-hitting C Pierre-Luc LaForest to ground out to end the game, and to earn his 21st save. With the win, Noe improved to 3-2 for the year, while Gregory suffered his first loss.
The Rox now stand two games behind Quebec for first place in the second-half standings, and as it stands now, the two teams would meet in the first round of the Can-Am League playoffs. With ten games remaining, Brockton is 47-36 and is just three wins shy of tying the team's record for wins in a season (50 - 2003, '05).
The Worcester Tornadoes come to Campanelli Stadium on Friday night to begin a three-game series, and to begin a six-game homestand for the Rox. First pitch tomorrow is set for 7:05 PM as it will be RHP Jeff Long taking on Worcester's LHP Zachary Zuercher.
