Postgame Recap: Overtime Goes to the Gamblers
February 15, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Chris Grando's breakaway goal 4:35 into overtime lifted the Green Bay Gamblers to a 2-1 victory against the Waterloo Black Hawks Tuesday at the Resch Center.
The puck was worked loose from behind the Green Bay net and knocked out to neutral ice to create the overtime winner. Grando caught up with it, speeding up the slot to lift a shot to the top corner over Robbie Beydoun's right shoulder.
Waterloo was able to force overtime thanks to Mikey Anderson's goal at 6:35 of the third. Trailing 1-0, Anderson had a screen near the front of the net. Back-peddling across the high slot, his low shot beat Maksim Zhukov low to the stick side.
The opening period was a scoreless stalemate as the Black Hawks outshot the Gamblers, 12-10. Beydoun made the period's best save at 14:18. Dante Palecco intercepted a pass and had the puck in the high slot, but the Hawk netminder snuffed out his chance with an assured glove grab.
Beydoun finished the night with 34 stops
Green Bay capitalized on a bad break to beat him at 13:38 of the second period. Palecco came up left wing on a rush, and his attempt to sweep a pass across the slot deflected off a Hawks defender and between the pads of a startled Beydoun.
Tuesday's game marked the Black Hawks' final road trip during the month of February. Waterloo returns to home ice on Friday to host the Sioux Falls Stampede. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a set of ThunderStix, courtesy of Veridian Credit Union.
