Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

February 15, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Return to the Beginning

Within the first five games on the 2016/17 schedule, the Waterloo Black Hawks met both the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Lincoln Stars. This weekend, the season series against each of those Western Conference opponents comes to an end at Young Arena. The Hawks are 3-1-1 versus the Stampede, who visit Friday for a 7:05 p.m. matchup; Sioux Falls won the most recent meeting, 3-2 in overtime, on January 21st. After an off day, the Hawks host Lincoln at 3:05 on Sunday; Waterloo is seeking to build on a 3-0-0 mark against the Stars. Including the games this weekend, just eight of Waterloo's 17 remaining games are against opponents from the Western Conference; the Hawks are 17-6-1 against rivals vying for playoff berths in the West.

Above and Beyond

Shane Bowers recorded an assist Tuesday versus the Green Bay Gamblers, giving him at least one point in eight consecutive games. During the run, he has now accumulated six goals and four assists. Last Friday in Lincoln, an empty net goal during a 5-3 win against the Stars was Bowers' 33rd point of the season, equaling his total from 2015/16. Saturday, another goal during Waterloo's 10-2 victory against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders moved him past his rookie point mark. Bowers' next appearance will be his 100th in USHL regular season play; his has accumulated 32 goals and 36 assists in a little less than two full campaigns.

Milestone Production

The Black Hawks' 10-2 victory versus Cedar Rapids Saturday was Waterloo's first ten-goal performance since winning by the same score on New Year's Eve in 2012 against the Lincoln Stars. On that occasion, the Hawks matched a USHL record with eight power play goals. Ian McCoshen, Taylor Cammarata, and Pijus Rulevicius each scored twice in that game. Waterloo has scored ten goals or more in six contests during P.K. O'Handley's 15 seasons as the team's head coach.

Goalie Offense

Peter Thome recorded a win with 20 saves during his Black Hawks debut on Saturday. For good measure, he also notched an assist on a goal by Mikey Anderson. Coupled with a pair of assists throughout 2016/17 by fellow goaltender Robbie Beydoun, Waterloo netminders now have three points this winter. It is the most by Hawks goalies since 2009/10 (Steve Racine had two, C.J. Motte tallied one).

Weekly Recap

Kevin Charyszyn scored during both a 5-3 road win against the Lincoln Stars on Friday and a 10-2 triumph at home against the Cedar Rapids. Emil Ohrvall accumulated five points (two goals, three assists) during the wins. Mike Anderson scored Saturday, then again during a 2-1 overtime loss at Green Bay Tuesday.
