Postgame Recap: Finishing with a Flourish

October 22, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Three third period goals spun the Waterloo Black Hawks from a second period deficit against the Sioux Falls Stampede to a 4-2 victory at Sanford Premier Center Saturday.

The win is Waterloo's four on the road to open the season.

Trailing 2-1 when the final 20 minutes began, Dylan Mills tied the score, putting in a rebound from the top of the crease at 2:30. Just 18 seconds later, Ethan Johnson swiped a puck in the offensive zone and squeezed a shot between Mikhail Berdin and the post.

The Hawks denied the Stampede an equalizer, despite more than a minute of five-on-three Sioux Falls power play time in the middle of the period. Ben Copeland added an empty net goal to set the final score with just under 30 seconds remaining.

Garrett Wait and Danny DiGrande set up the first goal of the night at 9:59 of the opening period. In tandem, they moved the puck out of the corner and into the right circle for Calvin Pokorny, who snapped a low wrist shot past Berdin. However Colin Swoyer tied it just less than three minutes later with a blast from the left point as the first penalty was ending during a five-on-three Sioux Falls power play. The Stampede thought they had taken the lead with under five minutes left before intermission, but a go-ahead goal was disallowed when the net was ruled to have been dislodged before the puck crossed the goal line.

Jared Moe twice denied Matt Quercia in the second period and made a spectacular glove save on Adam Dawe, but Sioux Falls still managed to take a 2-1 lead. Mitchell Mattson scored the only goal in the middle period, finding the net on a shot from the right circle at 3:14.

Moe finished the contest with 32 saves, the highest total by a Waterloo goalie this season.

The Hawks are on home ice Friday to host the Fargo Force. The first 1,000 on hand for the 7:05 contest will receive a 2017/18 schedule poster, presented by Karen's Print Rite. Fans age 21 and over can enjoy $2 Budweiser throughout the matchup. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
