POSTGAME QUOTES
San Diego Gulls
Leland Irving
On the game
It took a while to get going. We came out in the third and were able to put some pucks to the net. The other goalie (Cal Peterson) was good tonight, and unfortunately we come out with the loss.
On Ontario's defense
That's what they are known for. They have been a top team in the league for a number of years. For that reason they are good defensively and everyone buys into the system.
On what the team needs to do in tomorrow's rematch
Everybody has got that little extra to give. Just trying to improve on little areas here and there and get pucks to the net and traffic, go to the net for rebounds and hopefully a couple find the back of the net for us.
On the San Diego crowd
It's pretty exciting. It was a great crowd tonight. It's impressive, for a team this far south where there are no frozen ponds outside. This city really backs the team. It's unbelievable.
Head Coach Dallas Eakins
On the game
We didn't get many second chances, but you have to work to get your second chances. I just thought we wasted an unbelievable goaltending performance by Leland Irving. It's nights like tonight when you should be feeling great after the game. Your goalie stands on his head. I just thought our forwards really let us down tonight.
On the message for tomorrow
Our shift length has to shorten. You are not going to get anything done with your heart rate that high. The second thing, and they go hand in hand: High heart rate, can't think, and then you start turning over pucks. That's why suddenly the shots are whatever they ended up. We are going to have to outwork that team. They are bigger and stronger than us and that's where we need a little more will.
On Leland Irving's performance
I wish tonight we could have taken a big old syringe and pulled out of the fight and battle in his game and inject it in nine or 10 other guys. That's what he had, he was committed to fighting and battling for his teammates and the rest let us down.
