Post Rain Rally Pushes Sharks Past Grizzlies

June 25, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

Wilmington, NC

After the game was paused for over an hour due to weather, the Wilmington Sharks (13-9) rallied in the seventh inning to score two, take the lead and eventually beat the Gastonia Grizzlies (7-15) by a score of 7-4.

Trailing 4-3 in the seventh, the first two Sharks were retired to start the seventh. Brett Smith (Bucknell) walked and Nick Rotola (Oral Roberts) singled, giving Madison Stokes an opportunity to tie the game. He did that and more with a 2 RBI single to right field that would give the Sharks a 5-4 lead. The Sharks added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth when Grant Koch (Arkansas) hit his second home run of the season to bring home two runs and push the score to 7-4.

The Sharks had the lead early with three runs in the first inning. Smith singled and was brought home on a Alec Bohm (Wichita State) single. Bohm and Michael Hungate (Oral Roberts) scored when Ward Coleman (Davidson) doubled. They lost that lead on a two run home run in the fifth, moments before the weather delay started.

The win went to Cody Tyler (2-0). He struck out the side in his only inning pitched. Mason Ward (0-1) took the loss, pitching two innings, allowing four runs on four hits, one walks and striking out three.

The Sharks will be on the road on Sunday, at Wilson, before returning home for a four game home stand next week.
