Edenton Steamers News Release

GASTONIA, NC - The Edenton Steamers outscored the Gastonia Grizzlies 14-7 on Friday night. Edenton (9-13) collected its first win against a West Division opponent, while Gastonia (7-14) dropped its third consecutive contest.

Jesse Stinnett grabbed his first win for the Teal and Black. Stinnett (1-2) allowed four runs on six hits while picking up one strikeout in five innings.

Steven Farkas took the loss for the Grizzlies. Farkas (0-1) last two innings, surrendering five runs on six hits while walking three and fanning one batter.

Gastonia took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Clams came right back with three in the second. Consecutive walks to Andrew Hinckley and Tyler Ammerman put two on with no outs, and Ben Prada plated Hinckley with a one-out single. Two batters later, Aaron Aucker cracked a double to bring in two more runs and give the Clams a 3-1 advantage.

Gastonia bounced back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, capped off by a two-run dinger from Jackson Mims.

Edenton retook the lead with two runs in the third, but the Steamers really broke things open with a six-run fifth inning. Thatcher Coleman got things rolling with a leadoff homerun, and a bobbled ball by shortstop Jeremy Howell allowed Prada to reach safely. In the ensuing at bat, a botched throw to second by pitcher Charlie Richardson left both Prada and Mitchell Price safe on first and second, respectively. After Price and Prada advanced to second and third on stolen bases, a pair of wild pitches scored both runners to put the Steamers up 9-4. Aucker continued the rally with a walk, and a one-out single from Richie Cunningham left runners on second and third after a misplayed ball in center field allowed both runners to advance an extra base. Tony Rosselli loaded the bases with a walk, and singles from Hinckley and Coleman brought in three more runs to give the Clams a 12-4 advantage.

The Grizzlies manufactured a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to cut the Edenton lead to 12-7, but they would get no closer as the Steamers polished off the scoring with two runs in the eighth.

The Edenton Steamers finish off the week with a road contest against the Asheboro Copperheads at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night. The Clams return home on Monday, June 27, to host the Lexington County Blowfish. For more information, fans can call (252) 482-4080 or visit edentonsteamers.com.
